Should I buy a Garmin Forerunner 405?

I am looking to buy a running watch for cross country season. However, I am not sure whether to buy a more heart rate monitor devoted product such as a Polar, or a GPS devoted product such as a Garmin. I love the look of the Forerunner 405 as it does just about everything, although, I have heard that they are unreliable, they have a poor battery life and that they stop working in humid conditions (i live in brisbane). Your help is appreciated.

The Garmin heart monitors work just fine.
Though you might prefer the look of the 405, people regularly report trouble with its bezel controls, and it does also have fewer features than other models, such as fewer display screens at once, and a lessened battery life.
The Forerunner 305 remains an excellent value and includes heart monitor. The Forerunner 205 is more-or-less identical but lacks heart monitor, and lacks compatibility with cadence sensor and foot pod should you ever have need.
Garmin just recently announced a newer version of the 405, as well as the 310. The 310 is essentially a 305 update, improving the design a bit, as well as adding a more comfortable heart monitor, being waterproof, and having markedly extended battery life.
If you have the funds to look at the 405 — and especially if you’re concerned about wet/humid conditions — I’d easily look at the 310 instead now.
If you want a good value and basic water resistance is adequate, the 305 would work just fine.

I am looking for a new running watch (reliable) due to the fact that my Nikeplus watch bit the dust. I want a watch that is not too complicated and mainly want my distance, pace, and time displayed throughout my run. I wouldn’t mind a HR monitor but not a must because the strap would probably get on my nerves. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
