For pure modeling you’re right, but SL allows you to script items and share them with other people in a virtual world. That makes it a more powerful tool in my estimation.

Rhino is much better for this kind of thing. would take less than an hour to model this and is really easy to learn. It is a nurbs based modeling package. This SL program is polygon based… Most Polygon modeling software should be farily easy to model in though. Learning curve is not that steep… Does anyone still us Maya? to do something like this SUUUUUUUUUPER fast check out sketch-up…

Just a tip, SL’s build tools have many inherent limitations, the learning curve is STEEP. It is essentially still in BETA, also it is an online program, a.k.a. MMO. Just keep those facts in mind and you should be fine.
