Are GPS watches worth buying?

I am a runner and a biker i do over on average 200 miles a week on my bike, and about 35 miles running should I consider a GPS watch are they useful?

I have the Garmin 201 and I absolutely love it. I talked two of my friends into buy the new 205 and 305... They wonder how they ever ran without them. You can keep track of your pace, distance, and with the 305 you can measure your heart rate. You can also load training plans and routes on your computer and then input them into your 305. Training plans can be based on a target heart rate, distance, or pace. You can aslo set it for interval training and what not. I use the Motion Based software that you can access from anywhere once you upload your data and you can get weather and other data. It really depends on you and your goals. My friends and I are training for a marathon and it is great for keeping good data on your mileage and progress.

If you are statistically oriented and want to know how far, how fast, maximums, averages and all sorts of information, you need it. i have the timex ironman trail runner and would not want to live without it now.

They are nice but not perfect (weak signal in cities, canyons etc) or actually necessary.
I use mine Mostly as a HRM, and also when I am travel ling so I can be a little more accurate of tracking miles.

If you go for the Garmin Forerunner 305 you can even get a bike cadence accessory and handlebar mount for it.
Consider waiting a while, the 305 is not waterproof (which has upset a lot of triathletes, particularly as the older 301 was) I spoke with a guy from Garmin who thinks they will try and update this soon to solve the issue. Which means you can either get the new model or the current cheaper when this happens.

Because you do a large amount of miles, I would say that it wouldn’t be a waste if you bought one. Keep in mind though, if you’re ever on country roads way out there, or you travel off the path some or want to run off a road…it may not give accurate info as the satellites are configured with the streets.

I have the Garmin 205 and I love it, works great for running and biking. since its on your wrist you don’t have to worry about about forgetting and leaving it on your bike and risk soemone taking it. It’s packs easy for trips. They are very the most accurate device I have found for running. If I’m away from home, I can just go run wtihout having to drive a course first.
